Celebrating 60 Years

In this year 1957...

...The Cavern Club opens on Matthews Street in Liverpool, home of The Beatles' first appearance. Anthony Eden resigns and Harold Macmillan becomes prime minster of Great Britain. The Royal Christmas Message is broadcast on television with the Queen on camera for the first time.

AND Harry and June Nickerson open their first bakery in Gateshead.

Harry Nickerson was a trained pastry chef who had worked around the British Isles in many hotels including the Dorchester in London. It was on a visit home to Gateshead that he saw a opportunity to open his own bakery.

Their first shop was situated in Sunderland Road, Gateshead, next to the tram station. With the help of his wife June, they started what was is now Barry's Home Bakery.

A second shop was opened in Felling High Street a few years later, followed by a shop In Deckham. In 1963 the bakery relocated to Wellington Road in Dunston, Gateshead, where we operate our head office from now.

In 1970, son Barry joined the business. He was followed by youngest son Aaron in 1979. They both completed their bakery apprenticeships before taking over in 1995 when Harry and June retired.

Thus, family is at the heart of everything that the business is and does, with care and quality in every product being very important.
